Press Release
REDDING MAN SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS IN
PRISON FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A 44
year-old Redding
man was sentenced today to 13 years, 4 months in state prison for domestic
violence and making criminal threats. Harrison
Leroy Branum pled guilty in January in Shasta County Superior
Court to felony charges of corporal injury to a co-habitant and making criminal
threats. Branum
also admitted having a prior “strike” conviction from 1996 for corporal injury
to a co-habitant causing great bodily injury.
The
present case arose from an incident on June 15, 2008, when Shasta County
Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Duncan Lane regarding an assault and a
women running down the road. Deputies
arrived to find the victim at the residence of a neighbor, where she had fled
on foot after being badly beaten by the defendant, who was her live-in
boyfriend.
Branum has
six prior felony convictions and has served four separate prior prison terms.
Based on his prior “strike” conviction, Branum was
sentenced as a second striker under California’s
Three Strikes law and must serve at least 80% of his sentence before he will be
eligible for parole.
The
case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Brian Popkes and was investigated
by Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Berg and District Attorney Investigator
Jeremy Duval. Victim Advocate Angela Fitzgerald assisted
the victim through the court process.
