THREE STRIKES SENTENCE IMPOSED AFTER CONVICTION

April 9, 2010

Today, James Edward Carroll was sentenced to a term of 36 years to life in prison following his conviction for First Degree Residential Burglary with the special allegation of Use of a Deadly Weapon and Assault with a Deadly Weapon and two strike allegations.  Carroll, 56, had previously been convicted by a Shasta County jury.

On August 24, 2009 James Carroll went to a residence in Shasta Lake City armed with a knife and beat on the front door of the residence, threatening the victim. Mr. Carroll and the victim knew each other and the victim refused to open the door. Mr. Carroll then broke the front window and tried to stab the victim who was inside of the residence.  The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office responded and after a search Deputy Jason Gassaway arrested the defendant. The victim suffered wounds to his hand.

Defendant’s prior strikes were for two separate robberies. James Carroll has an extensive adult criminal record from various states beginning in 1975. Defendant also had just been released from prison for a different theft offense twelve days prior to the commission of this crime.

The case was investigated by Shasta County Sheriff’s Officer Jason Gassaway and prosecuted by the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office Career Criminal Unit.
