PRESS RELEASE
January 29, 2009
REDDING MAN SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS IN PRISON FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A 23 year-old Redding man was sentenced today by a Shasta County Court to 8 years in prison for a felony charge of causing corporal injury to a co-habitant. William Valentin Lopez pled guilty to the charges on January 15, 2009 in Shasta County Superior Court. He also admitted having a prior “strike” conviction for residential burglary in April of 2007, in which he had entered the home of his former spouse and assaulted her.
On November 3, 2008, while on probation from the 2007 conviction, Lopez was living with his girlfriend when she confronted him about her belief that he had struck her 2 year-old son. He responded by knocking her down, getting on top of her and striking her in the face and jaw with his elbows. Lopez fled before Redding Police were summoned but was located in the area a short time later and arrested.
Lopez must serve 80% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy
District Attorney Brian Popkes and was investigated by Redding Police officer
Timothy Renault and DA Investigator Mike Wallace.
