PRESS RELEASE

MALONEY
APPOINTED ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Today, District Attorney Jerry Benito announced the
appointment of Robert J. “Bob” Maloney as Assistant District Attorney of Shasta County.
Bob retired from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office as a Senior
Deputy District Attorney 18 years ago. Maloney and Benito both worked in the
District Attorney’s Office together in the late 1980’s. “I am pleased that he was interested enough
in re-joining the staff as my assistant and to come out of retirement to do so.
Maloney brings 44 years of criminal law experience with him and a particular
interest in teaching.” Benito said.
Maloney since the early 1970s has had a Community College
Teaching Credential in law and police science. He has lectured at junior
colleges, sheriff and police departments throughout the north state, as well as
at the Highway Patrol Academy in Sacramento
and the Department of Justice Specialized Training Institute in San Louis
Obispo. Benito said he welcomes Maloney’s teaching abilities since many of the Shasta County
prosecutors are new attorneys willing to learn from Maloney’s tutelage.
Beginning with a short stint in the Police
School at San
Jose State in 1960,
and training at the California Highway Patrol
Academy as a State Traffic Officer in
January 1964, Maloney rode a highway patrol motorcycle in San
Francisco and Oakland
while attending law school at night. By the time he finished law school and
passed the bar, he was a CHP Sergeant working in Los Angeles. Moving back to northern California with his wife and family of three children he
became a prosecutor with the District Attorney’s office in Mendocino County.
Shortly thereafter, he attained the position of Chief Supervisory Criminal Trial
Attorney. In March of 1976, he was
appointed Glenn County District Attorney. At the conclusion of his second term
of office in Glenn
County in 1983 he began
25 years of helping north state prosecutors and courts litigating criminal
cases. For a short time he was the Assistant District Attorney in Napa County.
Next, by court appointment in Trinity
County, he defended two
persons in separate murder cases, one of which started as a capital case. Next he ran the Narcotics Division of the Shasta County
DA’s office, prepared
murder cases and prosecuted one capital murder case through trial until 1991
when he retired for the first time. He worked for Siskiyou County
from 2004 to 2008 first as a Special Prosecutor for murder cases, then as
Assistant District Attorney. After his first retirement he was named a Special
Prosecutor for a nine defendant murder case in Trinity County
known locally as the “Hawkins Bar Murder”. Following the Hawkins Bar murder
trials Maloney was named Special Prosecutor in a 10 year old quadruple murder
case in Mendocino
County. “Maloney has a
reputation and is respected as an excellent trial attorney” Benito said.
“When I saw the opportunity to share my experiences with
young lawyers teaching them to become fair effective prosecutors, I welcomed
the prospect of coming out of my second retirement to assist Jerry Benito’s
administrative team” Maloney said. He added “It feels good to be back in the Shasta County
DA’s office”.
Maloney replaces former Assistant District Attorney Dan
Flynn who left the office in December 2008 to assume a position as a Shasta
County Superior Court judge. Benito left
the position vacant for the last 6 months in an effort to save money for the
County and his department.

Attorney Jerry Benito or Assistant District Attorney Bob Maloney at 245-6310.
