FORMER RESTAURANT MANAGER CONVICTED OF

EMBEZZLEMENT AND GRAND THEFT

May 27, 2010

PRESS RELEASE

This morning, Randy Scott Barr, the former general manager of Cheesecakes Unlimited in Redding, was convicted by a Shasta County jury of Embezzlement and Grand Theft after a five week trial.  The jury had deliberated for approximately three and a half hours before rendering their verdict.

Barr’s crimes occurred over a twenty-two month period of time.  Barr was in charge of the daily operations of the business when it was located on Market Street in Downtown Redding.  He systematically underreported the cash income of the business, and diverted the funds.  He was able to get away with the crime for as long as he did because the two owners of the business were lifelong friends of Barr, and never suspected that he would steal from them.  It was only after Barr quit his job without notice, and the owners re-took control of the daily management of the business that they noticed their daily sales totals seemed to go up dramatically.  They went back through the records from when Barr was in charge and noticed discrepancies.  The total amount of the theft was $44,161.66

Barr faces up to four years in State Prison. He will be sentenced July 13, 2010.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Erin M. Dervin, and investigated by the Redding Police Department Investigator Rob Wilson.
