EX-SHERIFF’S EMPLOYEE CHARGED IN EMBEZZLEMENT CASE 11/25/09 District
Attorney Jerry Benito announced today that he has filed 3 felony criminal
charges against Ursula Shoemaker, aged 59, a former Sheriff’s Office
clerk. Ms. Shoemaker is charged with
Misappropriation of Public Funds, Embezzlement by a Public Officer, and Grand
Theft. Ms. Shoemaker is accused of
misappropriating money paid by citizens to the Sheriff’s Office to renew
concealed weapons permits, fingerprinting services and copies of Sheriff’s
Office investigative reports from approximately 1/1/07 to 5/26/09. The total amount of money alleged to have
been taken is approximately $15,363.00.
If convicted, Ms. Shoemaker faces a maximum of 4 years in State
Prison. The District Attorney will seek
restitution for money taken. Upon
discovery of the thefts, the Sheriff took aggressive steps to correct the harm
to citizens who believed they had obtained a concealed weapons permit. The District Attorney will also seek reimbursement
to the Sheriff’s Office for the cost of time spent by public employees of the
Sheriff’s Office to correct the harm caused by the thefts. The case
was investigated by Redding Police Department Investigator Eric Little. For
questions, contact District Attorney Jerry Benito at 245-6310 or Sheriff Tom
Bosenko at 245-6165.
